A Night to Shine for the UHN Emergency Department

By October 31, 2018 No Comments

The annual Diwali – A Night to Shine Gala is a night filled with music, food, and entertainment that celebrates Indian traditions and culture. Not only is it Toronto’s best-attended Diwali celebration, but there is a charitable heart to this event.

Held on October 20 at the Beanfield Centre, the eighth annual instalment of the event continued the tradition of supporting a great cause: the University Health Network. This year, donations went toward emergency medicine and research at the UHN.

Working medical miracles

In the emergency department, every day is different. But one thing staff there can expect is to be faced with patients in crisis, and they often are presented with life-or-death decisions that they must make very quickly.

Watching these professionals at work, you’d almost think they were working miracles. Such was the case when a woman was admitted to the UHN Emergency Room with a heartrate of just 17 beats per minute.

Our own Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Michael Szabo, was one of the medical professionals involved in this case and was part of sharing the amazing behind-the-scenes story. Watch the video here to see what a life-changing difference the ER staff were able to make in just 19 minutes.

Dr. Szabo and Dr. Nowacki, one of our Medical Directors, were also present at the gala event, where this video was screened to highlight the incredible contributions of emergency room staff and show the UHN’s need for funding support.

With dinner, dancing, and live entertainment celebrating the beauty of Indian culture, and over $6.6 million raised for the UHN since the event’s inception, Diwali – A Night to Shine was a truly rewarding evening for all who attended.
